Discover Glasgow by Subway

Glasgow’s subway is super simple to navigate because, well, it’s a circle! No really, you can go clockwise or anti-clockwise; nothing more, nothing less. Because of its simplicity, it’s one of the best ways to get around the city and is much-loved by locals and tourists alike. Tickets are very reasonably priced, with a return costing just £2.90 while a 7-day ticket is just £14 and can whisk you away from the Albion Hotel to the city centre in under ten minutes. This month, we want to help you unearth some of Glasgow’s highlights and all featured areas are within minutes of a subway station. 

So, get your ticket for the Shoogler (so-called because it’s sometimes a little bit of a rough ride!) and enjoy Scotland’s biggest city like a local!

St Enoch Centre

At the southern edge of the city centre you’ll find St Enoch station. Alight here to discover a shopping centre packed with the latest trends, or walk along Argyle Street and embrace the hustle and bustle of the city, stopping off for coffee and donuts at Tim Hortons and enjoying a myriad of talented buskers on your path. 

Cowcaddens

Artist Rogue-One has certainly managed to brighten up one of the less picturesque places in Glasgow. Cowcaddens station is ideally placed to visit gems such as Singl-End bakehouse and the Tenement House and has been given a makeover recently with an entirely unexpected mural adorning it’s formerly grey walls. We won’t give away too much so as to not spoil the surprise, but we urge you to visit!

Bridge Street

Stepping out from this station it’s easy to assume there’s not a lot going on in the local area, but how wrong you would be! Just steps away from the station platform you’ll find Lotus Vegetarian Cuisine, a cult Chinese restaurant offering vegan and veggie options and a particularly budget friendly lunch, plus the Citizens Theatre is a mere five-minute walk and has a program bursting with classics, contemporary Scottish work and more. 

Ibrox

Home of the famous Rangers Football Club of course! This speaks for itself really. One of two Glasgow teams, Ibrox is a real institution and the atmosphere on match day is electric!

Kelvinbridge  

This one is so close to our front door you won’t even need to take a train! Definitely keep it on your radar though because this station is right in the heart of the West End – half way along Great Western Road and just five minutes from Byres Road. It’s surrounded by some of the best shops, cafes and restaurants in Glasgow; try the Kelvin Pocket for a downplayed interior, groovy tunes and excellent coffee and scones, or Inn Deep for craft beers and super tasty eats. 

Kelvinhall

Sitting amidst the hubbub of Partick’s main thoroughfare, you won’t have to walk far from Kelvinhall station to find yourself on the doorstep of the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, with its fascinating collections and enticing events program. Take a wander through the park to fully immerse yourself in one of Glasgow’s most popular green spaces – you won’t regret it, even in the winter weather!
